1. Follow their interests for play ideas

Pull up a chair and draw or colour with them. You don’t need special kit (although you might end up liking it and want to invest in an adult colouring book). If your child is into making jewellery out of loom bands, ask them to show you how to do it too. It’s great fun choosing colours and making bracelets for each other.

2. Find out what they wish they could do

I started an inline skating club at work and my own children commented that they wished they had that on offer to them, so we made our own club on the path in-front of our house. When I say club, there was nothing official about it, we just skated around and showed each other our skills. Much fun and laughter was had by all, just using things we already had in the garage.

3. Try something new together

Last year, I was sent a skateboard to review. As a child, I could never get the hang of boarding, but this one was shorter and wider and we were all able to learn how to use it and have loads of fun together. I also bought an adult version of the Micro Scooter on Facebook Marketplace, which the children love. We can scoot to the post box together and they love beating me in races (obviously I let them win 😉

4. Re-live your youth

For a wealth of play ideas, think about what you enjoyed doing most as a child. Friendship bracelets, hair braiding… whatever you loved, unleash your inner child and try it with your own children! Dive into imaginative role play adventures with your little one. Encourage their creativity by creating scenarios, such as playing house, operating a cafe, or exploring a magical kingdom. Engage in these imaginary worlds together and watch as their confidence and communication skills flourish.

5. Just start playing

Get the play-do out and start making scenes or models, I bet the kids will join you! Create a playlist of their favourite songs and start dancing, before you know it, you’ll have a partner! Whether it’s a silly dance-off or a karaoke session, moving to music fosters rhythm, coordination, and self-expression. More play ideas could be, learning to play simple instruments, such as maracas or a small keyboard, which can provide a deeper musical engagement.

6. Set a game up then walk away

Let your children find it and invite you to play. Board games and puzzles present an excellent opportunity for parents to engage with their children while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and social skills. Gather around the table and indulge in games suitable for their age, such as Junior Scrabble, Monopoly Junior, or cooperative puzzles, which promote teamwork and strategising. Playing games together allows you to model turn taking, being a gracious winner and a good loser. Play ideas don’t always have to cost loads, why not arrange a board game swap with friends or family.

7. Keep toys within Easy reach

If their toys are organised and within reach, children can play freely and help to tidy up too! Set up a designated space for arts and crafts in your home and let their creativity flow whenever the mood takes them. Painting, drawing, and crafting not only enhance fine motor skills but also encourage self-expression. Engage in joint projects, such as making collages or building models, where you can guide them while also allowing their imagination to shine.

8. Outdoor Exploration

My favourite of all the play ideas – taking your child outdoors leads to endless possibilities for exploration and play. From a nature scavenger hunt in the local park, to building sandcastles on the beach, outdoor play enables children to experience the wonders of the world first hand. Physical activities like tag, hide and seek and bike riding also provide great exercise and promote healthy habits.

9. Reading Together

Reading is a wonderful shared activity that can be cherished by both parents and children. Choose age-appropriate and captivating books, and let your child take on roles as characters while you narrate the story. Keep the reading experience interactive, asking questions or encouraging your child to predict what might happen next.

10. Cooking Adventures

Turn the kitchen into a culinary adventure for both you and your child. Allow them to assist in age-appropriate tasks, like mixing ingredients or decorating biscuits. Besides enhancing their fine motor skills, cooking together encourages creativity, fosters healthy nutrition habits, and cultivates an interest in diverse flavors.
